A building that has been part of downtown Valdese since 1935 is up for sale for the first time since it was built.
The former Belk-Broome department store at 100 E. Main St. was listed on Feb. 13 with Coldwell Banker Newton Real Estate in ɫ for $495,000. It is owned by Guigou Brothers Inc. The family has owned the building since it was built.
The building is currently home to 100 Main restaurant, and owner Brian Thompson said he plans to stay put.
“The intent is for the restaurant to stay,” Thompson said. “I’m sure, you know, with a new landlord, things can change, but 100% the intention for the restaurant is to stay within the community and stay there.”
The restaurant just celebrated 10 years in the location. It opened in January 2015.
“Truthfully, we couldn’t have done it without the support of the Guigou family and definitely making it through the pandemic with their support there. That family has kept us motivated and kept us alive, financially and everything, through the whole thing,” Thompson said.

He said the remaining members of the Guigou estate are getting older and want to sell the property.
“I think they’re quiet benefactors, per se, for the town, and I’m not sure the town knows them that well anymore, but they’ve been extremely supportive of downtown Valdese,” Thompson said.
Guigou Brothers Inc. declined to comment on the sale.
The 1.5-story building sits on 0.16 acres and has 4,448 total gross leasable space, according to county land records.
It was built in 1935 for a Belk-Broome department store, which it remained through the early 1980s, according to a history of the building written by Phyllis Jacumin on the town’s website. Before it became home to the current restaurant, the building housed a donut shop, shoe store, outlet store, video store and dance studio, according to Jacumin.
