A Burke County bridge over Interstate 40 will be shut down for nearly a month for repairs.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the Exit 111 bridge in Valdese will close on Monday, June 16, to start repairs. It is expected to reopen July 11.
NCDOT bridge maintenance crews will remove the surface on the bridge and its approaches and repair or replace bad areas of the concrete deck on the bridge and then resurface the approaches and bridge deck, said David Uchiyama, a spokesman for NCDOT.
There will be detours for motorists using the off-ramps of Exit 111. The detours are Abee’s Grove Church Road to Mineral Springs Mountain Road. Those south of the bridge will travel Flat Gap Road, onto I-40 eastbound, take I-40 Exit 112, turn left and then left onto Abee’s Grove Church Road.
Uchiyama said while the bridge is expected to be reopened July 11, that could be delayed due to weather.
The cost of the work is estimated at $150,000, he said.
