On behalf of the ɫ City Council and the citizens of ɫ, I would like to personally and publicly thank ɫ Public Safety, The Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Burke County Emergency Management, Burke County EMS and the Burke County Emergency Communications Center for their professional and respectful presence during the recent protest held at the Courthouse Square on Saturday, June 14.
I am grateful for the foresight, planning, cooperation and approach displayed by our law enforcement leadership which ensured that the permitted protest was kept peaceful.
The event brought a community together that included individuals from many walks of life who wanted to express their views peacefully. Thanks to the steady and civil work of our local police, the demonstration remained safe and respectful from start to finish. Their calm demeanor, clear communication and visible commitment to upholding both public safety and the right to free speech did not go unnoticed.
I received an email from Deputy Director John Hood II with Burke County EMS stating the following:
“I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for including us in the preparation and execution of the recent protest operation. It was truly encouraging to see the level of collaboration, communication and coordination displayed by all involved. This event marked one of the most seamless joint efforts we’ve seen in some time. The clear communication and shared understanding of each agency’s roles and responsibilities were key factors in the success of the operation. It is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved that the event concluded without incident.”
In times when tensions can run high, having a police force that understands the importance of de-escalation and community engagement makes all the difference. Their presence provided not only security, but also reassurance to protesters, onlookers and local businesses alike.
We often hear of what goes wrong, but it is equally important to acknowledge when things go right. I hope this message of appreciation serves as a reminder of the value our officers bring when they serve with integrity and compassion.
