A Newton police lieutenant charged with murder in a fatal officer-involved shooting was a firearms instructor and member of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office special operations team.
Newton Police Department Lt. Carlos Alverto Uribe, 28, of Conover, is charged with felony second-degree murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Camden Skyler Childers, of Stanley, according to court documents.
Childers was fatally shot following a series of police chases on June 26. Police officers chased Childers on his motorcycle three times. Officers were initially trying to pull Childers over for lack of proper registration.

Uribe is also a sworn officer for the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office as a member of the Special Tactics and Response team, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Aaron Turk said. Uribe is on administrative leave from the team, Turk said. Uribe does not get paid by the sheriff’s office.

Turk said city officers who are part of the STAR team are sworn as deputies to give the officer jurisdiction when responding to situations in the county. The STAR team has members from every police department in Catawba County except the Hickory Police Department, according to the Catawba County website.
Uribe is a certified firearms instructor with the state, Newton Police Chief Vidal Sipe said in an email. Uribe worked as a part-time firearms instructor for the Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Catawba Valley Community College program during the 2024-2025 training cycle, CVCC Red Hawk Communications Executive Director Jennifer Cobb said.
Uribe was promoted to lieutenant at the Newton Police Department in May 2024. He was hired as an officer in March 2018. Uribe’s current salary is $72,896.39, Sipe said.
Uribe was placed on administrative leave following the June 26 shooting. He remains on unpaid administrative leave as of Friday, Sipe said.
As a lieutenant, Uribe performed administrative and managerial work for the supervision of the operations of a shift of officers or the operations of a major division at the department, Sipe said.
During Uribe’s first appearance in Catawba County District Court on July 21, he was issued a $100,000 secured bond. As of Friday, Uribe was no longer listed as an inmate in the Catawba County Detention Facility.
Uribe is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
