Attorney General Pam Bondi sparked controversy after declaring that the Trump administration would be “targeting” hate speech, which she initially distinguished from free speech. In an interview with ‘The Katie Miller Podcast,’ Bondi said those engaging in hate speech would be pursued by the Justice Department, raising concerns about First Amendment protections. She pointed to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a reason for tougher action against hateful rhetoric. Bondi attempted to soften her remarks during an appearance with Fox News, saying employers should fire those who make “horrible” comments rather than calling for government prosecutions. Some conservatives, including Mike Cernovich and House Speaker Mike Johnson, warned that policing hate speech would contradict core American principles.
