VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS, CARRYING SIGNS, BANNERS AND FLAGS MARCHING AND CHANTING SLOGANS NEAR COLOSSEUM ROME, ITALY - MAY 31: Thousands of demonstrators marched in Rome on Saturday, May 31, to protest a new security decree proposed by Italy's right-wing coalition government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The protest, organized under the slogan "No to the Security Decree," began at Vittorio Emanuele Square, passed by the historic Colosseum, and concluded in the Piramide neighborhood. Protesters voiced opposition to the decree, which includes measures such as: Harsher penalties for attacks on security forces, legal protections for law enforcement officers, faster evictions of illegally occupied properties, preventing pregnancy from being used to avoid prison sentences, mandating body cameras for police. Critics argue the legislation expands police powers excessively and could undermine civil liberties. The demonstration also saw strong condemnation of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Many participants carried Palestinian flags and banners with messages such as "Stop the genocide" and "Stop bombing children." The security decree, already approved by the lower house of parliament (Chamber of Deputies), must now pass the Senate to become law. The government defends the measures as necessary for public safety, while opponents warn of potential overreach. The protest remained peaceful, with no major incidents reported.
