Sacred Harp singers revamp an iconic pre-Civil War hymnal

Singers at Holly Springs Primitive Baptist Church in West Georgia treat their red hymnals like extensions of themselves, never straying far from their copies of “The Sacred Harp." Many singers, whose families have been participating for generations, prefer to attend a singing then church on Sundays and see the song songbook as their Bible. And this year a new edition of “The Sacred Harp,” a pre-Civil War Christian hymnal first published in 1844, is being released.
