Former employees raised concerns publicly about Bowers’ leadership, the working environment at the humane society and animal welfare in March.
An online petition was started in April. The petition called for the removal of Bowers and Director of Clinical Services Emily Buckland, the resignation of board members, an overhaul of leadership and more oversight of the organization.
In April, the humane society announced . The humane society board placed Bowers on administrative leave.
The investigating agency was the Charlotte-based law firm of Jackson Lewis. The law firm presented their findings to the board on Wednesday, the organization said Wednesday.
“Following the review, and based on the information provided, the board voted to terminate the employment of executive director Jane Bowers, who had been on administrative leave since the beginning of the investigation,” the social media post said.
Emily Buckland will take over day-to-day operations of the humane society while the board searches for a new executive director, the post said.
The post from the humane society said the investigation “found no evidence of animal abuse at the humane society.”
“This process has been taken with the utmost seriousness and care,” the board of directors said in a statement. “Every decision made has been guided by our mission: to protect and advocate for the animals in our care, and to foster a supportive, respectful environment for the people who carry out that work every day.”
