What is Poppy Day? As Memorial Day approaches, you will see people wearing their poppies. Poppy Day is celebrated around the world. It was the American Legion family that, with Congress, brought Poppy Day here to this country. Poppy Day is the Friday before Memorial Day. The poppy flourished after World War I. Growing on the battlefield from the rubble of war. So, it became a symbol of the blood shed during war, and we wear the red poppy to remember those we lost on the battlefield, and our hope for the future.
The crepe paper poppies, many times, are made by disabled veterans and veteran organizations. The poppies are given to anyone that would like to wear a poppy, and there is an opportunity for a meaningful donation, although never required. All money collected goes directly to supporting veterans in Burke County. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 322 members will be out in ¶®É«µÛ on Friday, May 24, 2024, National Poppy Day, distributing poppies. Please stop and say hello. Every member is a spouse or direct descendant of a veteran. Some of us are veterans ourselves. And we each have our own story of why the poppy flower and Poppy Day means something in our lives. So, stop when you see us, say hello, let’s chat, and get your poppy. Wear it with pride.
And as Memorial Day approaches and we make plans with family and friends. Let’s remember those who have died protecting our freedoms. Before you head off to that picnic or BBQ by the lake, find time to honor their memory.
