Burke County Emergency Management rescue workers retrieved an injured hiker early Monday morning.
Emergency management said it was notified of an injured hiker along the Conley Cove Trail of Old North Carolina 105 in the Linville Gorge. Seventeen rescue workers from various organizations gave a man with a broken ankle medical care on-site and helped him along the trail back to the Conley Cove Trailhead, said Chris White, acting public information officer for Burke County. A release from White said rescue workers had to navigate challenging terrain during the six-hour operation.
The rescue workers were from Burke EMS, Burke EMS Special Operations, Burke Rescue, Oak Hill Fire Rescue and Linville Central Rescue, the release said.
The rescued hiker was taken to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation and care.
On June 13, a female hiker was rescued after falling into a ravine in the Buck Creek area of the Pisgah National Forest in Burke County. It took rescuers seven hours and the help of a helicopter to get the woman out of the forest. She suffered injuries to her lower legs after falling.
“The department also reminds all outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety, especially during the summer heat,” the Monday release said.
Burke County Emergency Management said hikers are encouraged to carry the essentials and bring extra water or water purification methods.
Burke County said the 10 essentials for safe hiking are:
1. Navigation (map, compass, GPS)
2. Headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries)
3. Sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen)
4. First aid supplies
5. Knife or multitool
6. Firestarter (matches, lighter, fire starters)
7. Shelter (emergency lightweight sleeping bag, space blanket)
8. Extra food
9. Extra water
10. Extra clothes
“These items can make a critical difference in case of emergency and help ensure a safe return from outdoor adventures,” the release from Burke County said.
